Two different Grapevines

From a landscaping point of view this city splits fairly cleanly.

The lake-adjacent lots carry more slope variation than almost anything in our Denton County service area. That brings grading and erosion into most conversations, and it changes where water can actually be sent, because a discharge point has to be both legal and downhill.

The established inland neighborhoods are a different job. Mature canopy, landscaping planted decades ago that has outgrown its beds, and grading laid out to standards that predate current practice. On ground that absorbs as slowly as this does, grade is most of drainage, so re-establishing fall is frequently the better answer and the cheaper one.

Renovation, not demolition

The instinct with tired landscaping is to take it all out and start again. That is usually the expensive answer and often the wrong one.

A thirty-year-old tree is not something you install, and mature material that was well chosen originally is worth real money. The work is more often structural pruning on trees that have never had it, hard renovation on shrubs that have outgrown their position, re-establishing bed lines that disappeared under growth, and replanting only the gaps that opens up.

Water and trees

Grapevine is in Tarrant County, so its outdoor watering schedule is set by the city rather than by the Denton County co-ops that cover our home towns. Confirm the current stage with the city before committing to work that needs establishment watering.

On trees, two things hold across this whole region. Do not prune oaks between February and June, because that is the high risk window for oak wilt. And check before removing anything substantial, because protected tree ordinances are common in this part of the metroplex and a permit may be required.
