A caution about size tables. DFW sources publish ranges with cost drivers, not clean small/medium/large tiers. The synthesis below is ours, extrapolated from those drivers — useful for budgeting, but we are labelling it rather than presenting it as surveyed local data:

• Small / ornamental (under ~25–30 ft) — crepe myrtle, redbud, young shade trees: roughly $150–$400
• Medium (~30–50 ft) — established red oak, cedar elm, ash: roughly $400–$800
• Large / mature (50–60+ ft) — live oak, post oak, pecan, bur oak, requiring climbing, rigging or an aerial lift: $800–$1,800+, rising past $2,000 with crane assistance

Pruning type changes the price

Neither DFW source prices these separately, but the labour differs substantially:

• Crown cleaning — deadwood, crossing and broken limbs. Baseline, low end of the range.
• Crown raising — lifting the canopy off a roof, drive or walk. A modest addition; few cuts, though rigging over structures adds time.
• Crown thinning / structural pruning — selective interior reduction for light and wind. Many small precise cuts throughout the canopy. The most labour-intensive and the highest cost per tree.
• Storm-prep heavy thinning — a DFW source puts this at a 20 to 30 percent premium over standard rates.

The North Texas factor that changes timing, not just price

Oak wilt. Denton County is oak country — post oak, live oak, red oak — and oak wilt is endemic to Central and North Texas. It spreads above ground via sap-feeding beetles attracted to fresh wounds, and below ground through the grafted root systems that connect neighbouring oaks.

The cost consequences are direct:

• Do not prune oaks February through June. That is the high-risk window. A DFW source confirms a premium is charged for oaks pruned in that period, because proper sealant protocol becomes mandatory.
• All oak wounds get painted immediately, year-round — a step crews from outside Texas routinely skip.
• If it takes hold, treatment is expensive. Macro-infusion runs $400 to $1,200 per tree, and it is a save rather than a cure.

Iron chlorosis is the other regional item: $200 to $400 per tree, widespread here because alkaline Blackland clay locks up iron and makes it unavailable to roots. Red oaks and pin oaks planted in DFW are especially prone.

Local permits are a real cost and a real delay

Flower Mound requires a tree removal permit for protected trees, with tree surveys, mitigation and replacement requirements, and Council-level review for specimen trees — and post oaks carry a lowered specimen threshold of 19 caliper inches, meaning a post oak becomes a specimen tree at a smaller size than most species.

Argyle likewise requires a permit to remove a protected tree, with a site plan showing exact location, caliper size, height and common name.

Homeowners routinely do not know that removing a large tree from their own property may require a permit, a survey, and replacement planting. Requirements differ between Highland Village, Argyle, Denton, Lewisville and Flower Mound, and they are amended over time — so verify for your address before scheduling anything.
